  • Established | Steady development in the area began in the mid-1990s.
  • Origin of Name | International Paper, which owned all the land, chose the name from a list of 30 potential names compiled by company focus groups.
  • What it's known for | One of the fastest-growing areas of the Grand Strand, Carolina Forest is known for its sprawling housing communities located on about 11,000 acres between Conway and Myrtle Beach, off U.S. 501.
  • What's ahead | The area continues to be developed with new townhouses, and housing subdivisions, churches, retail and commercial centers, as well as schools to serve the growing population. Residents have watched a new retail center grow with the addition of several new businesses including that area’s first Piggly Wiggly grocery store.
  • Major Employers | Carolina Forest Elementary School, Carolina Forest Middle School and Carolina Forest High School
  • Property Tax Rate | 46.3 mills
  • Local Buzz | Locals often cut through Carolina Forest Boulevard to River Oaks Drive and over Robert M. Grissom Parkway to avoid traffic snarls on U.S. 501.
  • Tourist Traps | Take a detour off U.S. 501 to drive through the growing section which is predicted to be home to 40,000 residents and could be incorporated into a town one day.
